Historic Environment Scotland

Using the latest technology to enhance operations and tourism.

Historic Environment Scotland (HES) are responsible for hundreds of historical sites across Scotland and they focus on a wide range of areas from preservation, repairs and tourism experiences for the general public. As part of a collaboration with HES, various prototypes were created to discover how creative technology (in this case VR) could potentially revolutionise their business. Several use cases were investigated as can be seen below.

Remote Access

With the wide variety of tourism sites at HES’ disposal - there is a vast quantity of 3D scanned physical sites. These could then be converted into VR ready models that could be explored and interacted with from anywhere in the world.

Digital Tourism

The power of VR collaboration also allowed for digital tours to take place. Members of the public would be able to put on a headset from the comfort of their own home and have a member of staff help them explore and discover the history of a particular site.

Sustainable Operations

With sites spread across the entire country, maintenance and upkeep is often a large logistical challenge with experts travelling large distances. Through the prototype designed we showcased how a team of experts could review scan data and annotate in realtime where work needed to be done. These sessions could then be easily captured for revisiting at a later date.
